Gamlitz Castle
Nature uses her palette to such wonderful effect in Styria that the landscape here has always been a sought after area for summer residences and for homes of the landed gentry.
The tradition of Gamlitz Castle reaches back to the year 1111, and has, from that time onward, been an attractive haunt of poets and philosophers, musicians and painters, theatre groups and many other kinds of artists.
The castle and winery presents its beauty in the form of a romantic refuge for enquiring minds and palates, and makes itself known as a slice of the sunny side of life.
The "Schloss zu Gamlitz" was built in the years from 1111 to 1131 and was bestowed upon the monastery “Stift St. Paul im Lavanttal” by the count Grafen von Sponheim. Even in those times winemaking was the hub around which life at the castle revolved, and the sacramental wine for the monastery was pressed at Gamlitz.
The castle also served as the summer residence of the abbot of St. Paul. Over the centuries ownership changed often until 1900 when it came into the hands of the Melcher family.
The castle has always been the centre of society life for the surrounding area. In 1990 the Styrian provincial exhibition on oenology was held here, and the exhibits can still be viewed in the castle’s wine museum today.
The guest rooms of the castle, quaintly named after various sorts of grapes, are decorated tastefully in traditional style by the Melcher family members. For the price of from € 40.00 to € 62.00 per night, you can take a trip back in time in the Styrian tradition. Further information under "Holidays at the Castle".
